Day 1: Albufeira

Arriving in Lisbon in the morning, we picked up our rental car—a charming little Fiat 500 convertible. With the top down and the warm Portuguese sun shining overhead, we embarked on our journey south to Albufeira. The drive was exhilarating; with open roads and minimal traffic enforcement, cars effortlessly cruised at speeds over 120 km/h. The changing landscapes, from Lisbon’s urban charm to the coastal beauty of the Algarve, made the drive all the more enjoyable.

Upon arriving in Albufeira, we checked into our accommodation and quickly set out to explore. The town's vibrant atmosphere was infectious, with its bustling streets, golden beaches, and lively nightlife. As the sun set, we found ourselves immersed in the town’s famous party scene. The narrow cobbled streets came alive with music, and we indulged in some delicious street food.

Day 2: Kayaking & Benagil Cave

Eager for adventure, we had booked a morning kayak tour along the breathtaking Algarve coastline. The early start turned out to be a great decision—the calm waters and fewer crowds made for a serene and immersive experience. As we paddled through sea caves and natural rock formations, the highlight of our journey revealed itself: Benagil Cave. The sunlight streaming through its natural skylight illuminated the golden sands inside, creating a picture-perfect moment.

After the kayak tour, we made our way to a nearby beach, where we spent the rest of the afternoon unwinding under the sun. The soft sand, the rhythmic waves, and the warmth of the Algarve made it a perfect place to relax after a morning of adventure.

Day 3: Lagos & Sagres

Determined to see more of the Algarve, we set off early to explore Lagos and Sagres before heading back to Lisbon. Lagos, with its charming old town and picturesque marina, immediately captivated us. Strolling along the boardwalk, we admired the dramatic cliffs and hidden sea caves that define this part of Portugal.

At one point, my friend decided to try his hand at driving our manual rental car. Getting into first gear proved to be a challenge, after a few lessons, he started to get the hang of it. However, he was exhausted soon, and he handed the wheel back, laughing at the effort it took.

From Lagos, we drove further west to Sagres, home to the Fortaleza de Sagres. Unfortunately, by the time we arrived, the fortress was closed, but the views from the cliffs more than made up for it. Standing at the southwesternmost point of Europe, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea, we were met with powerful winds and an endless horizon. Watching kite surfers brave the strong gusts was awe-inspiring, and we couldn't help but admire their courage.

As summer meant long days, the sun was still up even as we left Sagres around 7:30 p.m. Our drive back to Lisbon took us through the rolling mountains of Portugal, offering scenic views at every turn. Along the way, we stopped at a quaint village for a quiet dinner. Even in the smallest corners of Portugal, we found beauty in the culture, the food, and the people.

As we finally approached Lisbon, reflecting on our time in the Algarve, we couldn’t help but feel grateful for the adventure. The Algarve had given us everything—stunning landscapes, thrilling experiences, and moments of pure relaxation. Portugal, with its endless charm, had once again left us longing for more.
